non-SXSW shows in Austin next weekend...

For those around Austin who aren't necessarily going to SXSW and might be looking for a good show to go to...

Some friends I grew up with in Wisconsin are going to be in town and playing some shows next weekend, and they're not part of SXSW, so you can get into them w/o a badge.

The band is called Sunspot, and they put on a kick-ass show.

They've got (afaik) 4 shows booked for next weekend, and there may be more. They're doing "dinner" shows at 7:00 Thursday and Friday nights (March 13th and 14th) at Joe's Bar and Grill, which is more or less halfway between Lamar and Guadalupe on 5th. They're also playing at 1:30A Saturday morning (March 15th) at Trophy's on South Congress as part of the GoGirls Music "Invasion of the GoGirls" - a side festival run annually during SXSW. Finally, they've got a 5:00 show on Saturday afternoon (again the 15th) at Bikini's, on I-35 just before St. John's.

They've got some songs off their latest album up on their webpage to listen to. And like I said, they're a great show to watch. Give 'em a try if you've got some time and want to hear some kick-ass live music but don't have a SXSW badge/wristband.

Concert Saturday

For those of you in Austin who may be interested, the orchestra I play in here has a concert Saturday evening at 7:30, down at Bethany Lutheran Church (approx. Slaughter and Brodie). This is our annual Youth Concerto Competition concert - we are playing with this year's four winners, plus a PDQ Bach piece to round out the concert. Tickets are $10 and can be bought at the door. For more information, check out http://www.austincivicorchestra.org.

Could you live on $2 a day?

I don't post much, if at all, but this is worth posting for.

The title says it all - nearly half the world's population (over 2.8 billion - yes, with a B) does this.

Stand Up, Speak Out is working to inform and change this. Read whurley's blog to learn more.

And pass the word on.

and now the "fun" begins...

http://kucinich.house.gov/SpotlightIssues/documents.htm

Kucinich either has cojones grandisimos (yeah, probably not proper Spanish) or is really dumb.

Perhaps a little from column A, some from column B.

But at least he was smart enough to go after Cheney, not Bush.

Wow.

Fox (as in Fox News Channel, not the fine folks bringing us the Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad, and 24) are trying to make their "own" Daily Show?
